Mix-ups with wearing LiveStrong Yellow
In a recently filed Associated Press report, hospitals are starting to remove, or taping over, patient's LiveStrong braclets due to fears of a fatal mix-up.
It appears that that "wearing yellow" is the same as "please do not resusitate." A hospital chain uses a yellow bracelet to indicate patients who should not be resusitated, should their heart stop.
The extremely popular, and almost impossible to get, rubber bracelets are sold through the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It's part of the champion bicycle racer's efforts to raise money for cancer education and research. So special, in fact, that I was interrogated at the post office when I was trying to send a few to family friends.
Most hospitals use some kind of colored bracelet, or colors on a bracelet, to indicated the needs and special instructions to doctors, nurses and other staff.
At BayCare Health hospitals, purple bands mean that the patient is at risk of falling. Red means the patient has allergies. It should be duely noted that not all hospitals use the same coloring system, and if you have to go, or your family is there, you should check to see what they use - just to be safe!
Though no current problems have been reported, BayCare Health Systems has decided that they didn't want to take any chances on the possibility that something could potentially go wrong. Which, to me, spells "law suit alarm."
