If you want a really compact flashlight, check out the Pak-Lite 9-Volt LED Flashlight. No opening tops of lights, not little bulbs, just snap on the cap to a 9-volt battery and it's a light for the using!
This weather resistant 2-LED flashlight can functions for about 20 hours. It's obviously designed to handle emergency situations, or (if you're like me) a quick way to try to find all of the automation buttons on the X10 remote when everyone is asleep!
